As a birthday treat from Dan, he let me choose a break away for us for a couple of days which was well needed just to switch off and get away from the stresses of city life and retreat to the countryside. I chose Stow on the Wold which impressed us to no end! The Cotswolds has been a place to visit on my list for a long time and now we live only an hour away, it was a perfect choice to get away without the hefty travel!
For the first time ever we got ourselves a little cottage on AirB&B which really topped off the countryside getaway! We found Stow on The Wold and then we located the cottage. The cottage is a ten-minute drive away from the town centre, a definite drive as it is quite hilly and far from the town but there is plenty parking in the town and even free parking near a superstore which helped no end! We visited the town in the morning before checking into our cottage as well as the next day. Stow is one of the most quaint towns I’ve been to and was bustling with tourists as well as locals. There are plenty independent shops, cafes, pubs and food stores to visit and you could easily spend a few days exploring it all!
Our accommodation was called Clematis Cottage on Flagstone Farm which was a 1-bed cottage on a farm where there were a few other cottages (much larger/18 sleeper’s) on the land. It was oh so typical country cottage and I loved it! Every nook and cranny had been decorated perfectly in tune with the rest of the cottage. There is no breakfast available on site so either bring some along or head out to town to find some!
If you were to stay here for a week or longer, you’d be well supplied with a fully stocked kitchen, dining table, sofa and chair, and one large double bed. There is also a wardrobe and chest of drawers perfect if you want to make yourself fully at home!
Nothing has been missed here as the kitchen has all the supplies like washing up liquid, pots and pans, wine glasses, dishwasher, washing machine and coffee supplies! We even had fresh flowers waiting on the dining table on our arrival, this added to the cuteness of the cottage. All the linen and supplies were fresh and restocked which signified good and consistent housekeeping!
We were able to check ourselves in and leave without meeting the hosts but this was a great way to make the experience hassle free and we appreciated it nonetheless. The cottage is facing the courtyard so you can see the two other large cottages but there are net curtains to hide away but keep the light in if you want your privacy, but you’ll never feel like you’re being watched!Of course, we lit the fire as this was a great feature for the cottage. We were able to wrap up, eat some snacks and keep warm with the fire burning. A cute feature that made the cottage well worth it!
As we only stayed for the night, we arrived and explored Stow, had lunch in town, had a couple glasses of wine and wandered the shops. We checked into the cottage in the afternoon and then went for a walk to work up an appetite before dinner. The area is perfect for exploring the countryside and views but be warned there is a very quiet village nearby and not much else, so don’t expect a pub stop off half way!!
For dinner, we chose The Old Butchers. This was one of the best restaurants we’ve ever been to. It made everything we could possibly desire and suited our favourite foods perfectly. It also had an extensive wine list which complimented the food really well.
We had the charcuterie board to start which is seen above, this was so nice and freshly prepared. The selection of cured meats was incredible and there was a lovely selection of pate, pickles and nuts to go alongside the meats. As this restaurant specialises in meat and fish, we also went for a couple of langoustines and oysters as our ‘second’ course which was a lovely treat to have such fresh tasty fish.
For our ‘third’ course, as the other courses were small we went for two small plates of the crab spaghetti and steak tartare, these were perfect for us to share too. I would happily have the meal all over again and if you’re visiting the Cotswolds, you must stop here, it’s simply divine!
We absolutely loved our stay in Stow in the Wold and would love to return again. I’d highly recommend it as an UK holiday spot and it’s the perfect place for a romantic trip away.
